OUR IMPACT
In 2022 Dallas Black Dance Theatre partnered with Dallas ISD to offer virtual performances with a TEKS aligned study guide to all students in every grade level in Dallas ISD. The performances were a tremendous success, with over 25,000 Dallas ISD students of all ages participating. Many Dallas ISD teachers offered valuable feedback that speaks to the success of DBDT Virtual Performances and materials.
“My students were able to talk about how the dances enhanced the music and made them more interested in the message of the music. There is something most of my students have never been able to see. Between the pandemic restrictions and low socio-economic levels, this was a unique experience which all of us appreciated.”
“They haven’t been exposed to Modern dance as much as TikTok and other social media dances.”
“Most of my students are of Latino and African-American heritage. They had also been learning about Dr. Martin Luther King and other icons of the Civil Rights.”
“It was devastating to our kids to lose in-person trips. Having good virtual programs helps immensely.”
“It’s fair for every student and class to participate, instead of just a selected few.”
Dallas Black Dance Theatre will partner with Dallas ISD again in 2023, providing access to exclusive Virtual Performances and TEKs approved study aids.

DBDT’s Odetta, offers a dramatic lesson on the emotional and spiritual struggle of the Civil Rights movement. The immersive performing arts experience is named after singer, guitarist, and activist Odetta Holmes. Odetta, often referred to as “The Voice of the Civil Rights Movement,” sang on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial at the historic March on Washington and sang for the brave souls marching for Civil Rights from Selma to Montgomery in Alabama.
Our dance was uniquely reinvented and filmed across many locations throughout Dallas.
